The blade may be used to scrape the anterior corneal surface to remove the epithelium, frequently done following a corneal lesion. With proper surgical technique, the knife may also be used to dissect the deeper layers of the cornea as needed. Both straight and curved models are available depending on surgical preference.

The knife is commonly used in the discission technique, in which a knife is used to open the lens capsule to expose the contents. Ziegler Iris Knife is a multipurpose tool used in ophthalmologic procedures involving the iris and lens. Primarily, the knife is used to create an incision in the iris after a cataract procedure if necessary. It can also be used to perform a capsulotomy. Three different blade sizes are available with the knife depending on surgical preference.
